Teeth Whitening in Stoke on Trent – Your Questions Answered

A lot of patients ask us about teeth whitening treatments. Here are some of the things you need to know before you decide on your best option for this popular dental treatment…

Why should I go to the dentist for teeth whitening when there are lots of much cheaper kits available on the internet?

This is a commonly asked question and – as we all know – everything can now be bought online!!!

However, there are now new regulations re: teeth whitening and it is actually illegal to sell or provide whitening unless you are a dental health professional (with very good reason!)

And, anyhow, how would you know whether that “tooth whitening gel” you bought online really is genuine??

The answer is, unfortunately, you wouldn’t!!

Safety Issues

Whitening gel must only be a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide or 16% carbamide peroxide. Higher percentages can cause serious burns and there’s no knowing exactly whether the whitening gel on the internet is genuine, in date or even safe!!

The reason that dentists/dental health professionals should provide and supervise whitening is because it is very important to check that the mouth is healthy first.

If you have cavities or gum disease, whitening could cause severe pain. A thorough dental health check must be carried out before whitening is started and the gums should be nice and healthy with no bleeding.

So, what about the things I put the gel in? I’ve seen some you can heat up and bite into… They look easy and cheap!!

Custom made trays from proper “shapes” of your teeth give much better results; they are comfier, fit better, and protect the gums from burns due to the fabrication of special “wells” to collect excess whitening gel. Saving money isn’t worth getting a nasty burn, is it?
